June 29–July 1, Box Office Update
Last week, June 29–July 1, saw UK cinemas record the second worse box office return of 2018, with Sicario 2 failing to remove Jurassic World: Fallen Kindom from the top of the UK box office.
The UK box office receipts have plummeted due to a combination of both soaring temperatures and also the World Cup football being broadcast. The UK market has recorded the second worst weekend at the UK box office this year. The only other week was the week before the release of Avengers: Infinity War, where new releases were notably thin on the ground. However, we were also hit by sunny weather. Once again, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was once again top of the Box Office, which is only 1 of 3 films that have spent more than 4 weeks at the top of the charts. Interestingly, Jurassic Works: Fallen Kingdom has grossed, up todate, £34.5m In comparison to the original Jurassic World which, in 2015, was at £53.8m at the same point of it’s cinematic run.
The UK Market
It is a challenging time at the moment at the box office, which saw 34% less takings from the previous session and also were down 66% from the same weekend last year. UK is currently 1/3 of the level it was in 2017 and, with no forthcoming certain box office hits due to be released over the next week and with temperatures set to remain, there doesn’t seem to be a let up soon. Let’s hope The First Purge can do something for the box office, when it is released on Wednesday.
